Another Pro-Business DBA Another Pro-Business DBA

In an interview given to SearchOracle.com, Anthony L. Politano, espouses the benefits of being a business-savvy DBA.
In this SearchOracle.com interview, Politano offers tips for closing the communication gap with business and explains why avoiding certain "red flag" words and attaining a working knowledge of business can do wonders for DBAs who want to get ahead.

Politano talks about having business knowledge as being key to the success of a DBA, similar in vein to the comments of Peter Armstrong, Chris Foot, and myself on podcasts available here on dbazine.com.

So what steps are you taking to become more knowledgeable about business instead of just being a tech geek? Here are some books that you might want to look into that can help you transition from being just a techie, to a business-savvy techie:

  • The IT Payoff by Sarvanan Devaraj and Rajiv Kohli - a book that discusses how to measure the business value of IT
  • My Job Went to India by Chad Fowler - offers guidance on how to deal with the changing dynamics of today's business (including outsourcing, among others
  • The Cluetrain Manifesto by Rick Levine, et al - a marketing book for the Internet-age (another marketing book worth reading is Purple Cow by Seth Godin)
  • You might also look into reading the Harvard Business Review and maybe Business Week.
