Stolen VA Data Recovered
Some happy news that hopefully will not cloud the issue that "something" still needs to be done to better protect our data.
Computerworld reports that the ...missing laptop and hard disk containing personal data on over 26.5 million veterans has been recovered, Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary Jim Nicholson announced this morning.
I wrote about that in this blog under the title More Data Stolen. The recovery of the laptop was reported by Mr. Nicholson right before a hearing of the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs. And, even better news, was that it was reported later that FBI forensics testing showed that the data on the disk had not been improperly accessed.
So here is a story with "good news" at the end. However, it does not excuse the lackadaisical attitude that enabled the data to be stolen - and exposed to access - in the first place. Yes, it is good that the data was not accessed for nefarious purposes, but the bigger question still looms - "What are we going to do about all of these data breaches?"
