More Woe for Frequent Travelers More Woe for Frequent Travelers

Although this blog is normally reserved for database management issues, today I will use it to vent about the continuing degradation of air travelers.
I am a frequent traveler. My job demands it. So I get to see a lot of different airports and travel to different cities. This sounds more glamorous than it is. Most of the time I only get to see the inside of the airport, to a taxi, to a hotel, and then the inside of a corporate headquarters or maybe a convention center. There is usually no time for "enjoyment" on the road.

One of the worst parts of travel is dealing with the airlines. And things just continually get worse and worse. Coach seats are not designed for big and tall people. Anything more than 2 hours in one of those seats borders on life-threatening to me. And if I have to put a bag under the seat in front of me it gets worse. I have long legs and I need to stretch them.

Anyway, these are the common discomforts of flying and we are all used to them. In fact, I think it is sad that we are taking them for granted as the status quo. But the status quo is about to get worse. Travel Mole reports that Northwest is about to start charging extra for exit row seats and certain aisle seats. So those seats in coach that are only marginally comfortable? They're gonna cost ya extra!

Even worse, the same article noted that Northwest is going to charge a fee for each checked bag... Now that is the last straw! People already try to carry too much on to the plane and now this will just make it worse. I can see it now. Here comes some yokel toting his kids and four large bags onto the plane. As he is trying to stuff them into the overhead compartment the flight attendant tells him that the won't fit and he'll have to check his bags. Now, does she ask him for the fee right there? Or does he not get charged? If not, then everyone will try to bring everything on board. If he does get charged a fee how will that be collected?

I don't know, but I think air travel is about to become a LOT worse than the horrible experience it already has become. h
