Hurricane Rita: All is Well
However, I was one of those people trying to get out of the Houston area to Dallas to ride the storm out. Turns out, after more than 16 hours on the road and still barely 50 miles from home I turned around. There was no gas, so if I continued I'd have run out and been somewhere on I45 in my car when the hurricane landed. So it was better to go home and ride it our. At least I can get shelter from the 100 degree temperature and have a place to go to the bathroom.
In my opinion, though, the disaster preparedness was not very well-handled. Why wouldn't the state close down I45 south and allow north traffic much earlier than they eventually did? It would have saved a lot of pain and suffering on many. And where was the well-thought-out plan to for millions of people to flee Galveston (and other areas) but not having sufficient gasoline available.
The bottom line, though, is that we are safe. But let's put pressure on all levels of government to get their act together and ensure proper disaster plans are in place!
