Ship to Shore
Cruise into savings with developers at sea.
A novel new "offshore" IT outsourcing company is setting up business in their own cruise ship three miles off the coast of California. The company, SeaCode Inc., might be on to something.
I hope you clicked on the link to read the ComputerWorld interview. But if not, basically this venture is hiring programmers to live and work on a used cruise ship that will be refitted for programming.
Is this the future of IT? Will future IT professionals live in cruise ship cabins somewhere off the coast of the US?
I doubt it. There is probably a market for a company like this, but I don't think it will become the model for the IT worker. This will probably appeal to younger workers without a family who are looking for work. It could attract young programmers from all over the world, though.
But I didn't see any openings for DBAs on that ship...
