Useful New Mainframe DB2 Info on the Web Useful New Mainframe DB2 Info on the Web

For those of you who work primarily with DB2 on the mainframe, here are some very useful new sources of information on the web.
As a mainframe DB2 supporter it can be difficult to track down and keep up with all the useful new information that sprouts up on the web. Although there is a lot of good stuff, sometimes it is woven in and amongst other information that you don't want (or have time) to wade through. Well, let me guide you over to two great new sources of DB2 information.

The first one is a new web portal that is dedicated exclusively to mainframe DB2 content. It is called DB2 portal and can be found at www.db2portal.com.

DB2portal.com is the online guide to DB2 on the mainframe. The portal provides an online experience unlike any other because it is focused on a specific target: users of DB2 for z/OS and OS/390 only. The allure of db2portal.com is this narrowly targeted focus on mainframe DB2 users.

Furthermore, DB2portal.com is unique in its organization. Instead of just throwing together a bunch of contents and links, the site is highly organized. It features content organized into the following areas:

  • - DB2 CERTIFICATION
  • - STORED PROCEDURES, TRIGGERS, & UDFs
  • - DB2 PERFORMANCE
  • - DB2 CODING AND DEVELOPMENT
  • - DB2 DATA SHARING
  • - DB2 SECURITY
  • - DB2 VERSION INFORMATION
  • - DB2 DATA WAREHOUSING AND B.I.
  • - DB2 WEB AND e-BUSINESS
  • - DB2 CROSS PLATFORM (w/MAINFRAME)
  • - DB2 & CICS
  • - DB2 BOOKS
  • - DB2 DATABASE ADMINISTRATION
  • - DB2 SITES
  • - DB2 TOOLS AND UTILITIES
  • - DB2 GENERAL INTEREST
  • - DB2 & ERP
  • - DB2 JOBS
  • So far I've just talked about DB2portal.com, but I said that I'd discuss two new sources of DB2 information on the web. The second is a great new blog by Willie Favero, a well-known and highly regarded IBM DB2 specialist. Willie's blog can be found at http://blogs.ittoolbox.com/database/db2zos/ and it focuses exclusively on mainframe DB2. Well, almost exclusively. Sometimes you get an off-topic post from Willie, but if you know Willie you'll know that they are always entertaining to read.

As Willie himself writes, here is the focus of his blog: "However, as things roll along, I hope to discuss all aspects of DB2, from performance to backup & recovery. My intention is to focus more on what is new and what is current, but we will dabble with topics that have been near and dear to the DB2 community for quite some time."

So until my next entry, enjoy investigating and reading up on DB2 for z/OS and OS/390.
